Zakopane Cost Guide: How Much Does a Trip Actually Cost?

How much does Zakopane actually cost? Accommodation, food, activities and hidden costs — with honest budget tiers for every type of traveler.

By Tymoteusz Mróz9 min read

The "Poland is cheap" assumption gets a lot of first-time visitors into trouble. Zakopane is a Polish mountain resort town that has been popular with domestic tourists for over a century. The market knows what the market will pay. You'll spend more here than in most Polish cities, less than in comparable Alpine resorts.

Here's an honest breakdown.

Daily Budget Tiers (Per Person, Excluding Accommodation)

Backpacker: 120–180 PLN/day (~€28–42)

  • Staying in a hostel dorm or budget pension
  • Eating at bar mleczny (milk bars), pizza by the slice, pierogi spots off Krupówki
  • Using public buses for all transport
  • Focused on free activities: valley walks, Krupówki strolling, public beaches at Morskie Oko
  • One paid attraction per day maximum

Mid-Range: 250–400 PLN/day (~€58–93)

  • Private room in a guesthouse or 3-star hotel
  • Sit-down lunch and dinner at local restaurants
  • Cable car or funicular one or two times
  • Local bus for transport, occasional taxi
  • Mix of free and paid activities

Comfort: 450–700 PLN/day (~€105–163)

  • Good hotel or well-equipped apartment
  • Better restaurants, local wine or craft beer with meals
  • Ski day pass or thermal baths included in typical day
  • Taxi when convenient

Luxury: 800+ PLN/day (~€186+)

  • Premium hotel or spa resort
  • Multiple ski days or spa treatments
  • Private guide
  • Fine dining

Accommodation Costs

Prices below are per room, per night, based on 2026 rates. Peak season surcharges (Christmas, New Year, February ski week, July–August) can add 50–150% to these figures.

  • Type: Hostel dorm bed; Low Season: 60–90 PLN; High Season: 100–150 PLN
  • Type: Budget guesthouse (private room); Low Season: 150–250 PLN; High Season: 300–450 PLN
  • Type: Mid-range hotel (double); Low Season: 300–550 PLN; High Season: 500–900 PLN
  • Type: Good 4-star hotel; Low Season: 600–1,000 PLN; High Season: 1,000–2,000 PLN
  • Type: Luxury/spa resort; Low Season: 1,200+ PLN; High Season: 2,000–4,000 PLN

Booking timing matters significantly. Christmas–New Year bookings often run 6–12 months in advance. For July–August: book by March. For ski season: book by November. Midweek in shoulder season is when you get genuine value.

Food and Drink

Cheap Eats

  • Bar mleczny (milk bar): the cheapest honest meal in town. The one worth knowing about is Tatrzański Bar Mleczny at ul. Droga na Bystre 2, where locals and people coming down off the trails have been eating for years. Expect a full plate for a fraction of restaurant prices — treat any figure you read online as a range to re-check, not a fixed price.
  • Zapiekanka (baguette with toppings): 10–18 PLN
  • Pierogi (from a fast-service spot): 20–30 PLN for a serving
  • Pizza by the slice: 8–14 PLN
  • Oscypek from a góral vendor (Krupówki stalls): 5–15 PLN depending on size

Sit-Down Restaurants

  • Restaurant main course: 35–70 PLN
  • Kwaśnica (highland soup, a full meal in itself): 18–28 PLN
  • Traditional karczma dinner (soup + main): 60–100 PLN
  • Coffee: 12–20 PLN
  • Craft beer: 16–22 PLN
  • House wine (glass): 20–30 PLN

Fine Dining

Zakopane's upper end is worth knowing about. Restaurant Giewont in Kościelisko holds one Michelin star in the 2026 guide; Stary Niedźwiedź has a Bib Gourmand; Marilor appears in the Michelin Guide Poland 2026 selection. Drukarnia Smaku and Bubuja are strong local picks in the same bracket. Budget 150–300 PLN per person for a tasting menu, drinks separate. [VERIFY: current tasting menu pricing at each venue before publication.]

Note that Restaurant Giewont is in Kościelisko, not Zakopane itself — plan transport accordingly.

Mountain Hut Food

Plan for 20–35 PLN for soup, 40–60 PLN for a main course. Mountain hut food is good and honest, but not cheap — it's hauled up by team of workers. A full meal for two at Murowaniec or Pięć Stawów will run 150–200 PLN.

Activity Costs

Hidden Costs Visitors Miss

Tatra National Park entry — every time you enter. The entry fee is per-visit, not a season pass. If you enter the park three times in a trip (Morskie Oko, Kasprowy, Kościeliska), that's three entry fees. [VERIFY: Whether a multi-day pass exists in 2026.]

Opłata klimatyczna / uzdrowiskowa (resort/climate fee). Zakopane levies a small daily fee on overnight visitors, collected through accommodation. Currently around 3 PLN per person per night, sometimes included in room price, sometimes added at checkout. [VERIFY: Current rate and collection method in 2026.]

Kasprowy Wierch cable car — reservations. You can't just show up on a summer Saturday and expect to ride. Online booking is recommended; there are time-slot limitations. [VERIFY: Current booking system for Kasprowy cable car 2026.]

Parking fees. If you drive, expect 20–40 PLN/day for central parking. More at peak times. The Palenica Białczańska lot charges a fee for the road use. [VERIFY: Current parking fees at major lots.]

Mountain hut booking fees or deposits. Some shelters charge a booking fee or require a deposit. Book well in advance for peak season. [VERIFY: Current booking policies at major shelters.]

Currency conversion fees. If your card applies international transaction fees, they add up over a week. Check with your bank; many modern travel cards (Revolut, Wise, etc.) eliminate these fees.

Saving Money — Realistic Tips

Stay in surrounding villages. A guesthouse in Kościelisko or Murzasichle costs 20–40% less than central Zakopane and is 10–20 minutes by bus or taxi. The village experience is also better.

Eat away from Krupówki. The main strip carries the pricing that comes with heavy footfall. Walk one or two streets off it and both prices and quality improve. Milk bars are the best budget option for a filling Polish lunch.

Pack snacks for hikes. Mountain hut prices are what they are. Bringing your own lunch for a full-day trail saves 60–100 PLN per person.

Book midweek. Mid-week accommodation is consistently 20–40% cheaper than weekend rates. If your schedule is flexible, choose Tuesday–Thursday stays.

Come by train or bus rather than by car. There are plenty of long-distance connections, and in the 2025/26 timetable the fastest services from Kraków were coming in under two hours — always check the current timetable rather than trusting a number in an article. Once you're here you have city buses, regional minibuses, taxis, Uber and e-scooters. Choosing accommodation near a stop routinely saves more time and money than parking in the centre does.

Ski passes on weekdays. Some resorts offer reduced weekday rates. [VERIFY: Which specific resorts have weekday discounts in 2026.]

Termy in the evening. Several thermal baths offer reduced evening rates after 6pm. [VERIFY: Current evening rates at Termy Bukowina and Termy Chochołowskie.]

Where to Splurge (Worth It)

Kasprowy Wierch cable car on a clear day. The view from 1,985 m over the Tatras on a cloudless morning is worth every złoty.

One proper góralskie dinner. A full traditional meal at a good karczma — kwaśnica, lamb, oscypek with cranberry — is the food experience of the trip. Budget 150–200 PLN per person with drinks, and don't rush it.

Termy on a cold evening in autumn or winter. Outdoor thermal pools when it's -5°C and there's snow on the mountains is not a thing you'll forget easily.

Night at a mountain shelter. The logistics are more involved than a hotel, but watching sunrise from above the clouds at Pięć Stawów or Murowaniec is worth the dormitory experience.

Pro Tip: The Tatry Card offers combined discounts on cable cars, funicular, and some museums. Run the numbers against what you're planning before buying — it pays off for visitors doing multiple cable car rides in one stay. [VERIFY: Current Tatry Card structure and pricing in 2026.]
